Leland and Jane Stanford established Stanford in 1885 in honor of their only child, Leland Stanford Jr., who had passed away from typhoid disease at the age of 15 the year before. Former California governor and U.S. senator Leland Stanford amassed wealth as a train magnate. On October 1, 1891, the university opened its doors to its first coeducational, nonreligious pupils. Leland Stanford died in 1893, and Stanford University struggled monetarily again after the 1906 San Francisco earthquake, which severely damaged much of the campus.Stanford's provost, Frederick Terman, encouraged and supported professors and alumni who wanted to start their own businesses after World War II in order to create a self-sufficient local industry that would become known as Silicon Valley.
